Shay nodded and turned, flinging his fedora back onto his head and stepping into the inn, he walked to the main reception desk and dropped his suitcase, there was no one there so he decided to wait

Julia slipped the card into her bag, leaning against the wall going over where to start. She looked up and down the road that she was in, sighing heavily. “I really don’t know where to start.” she mumbled

Shay takes out his notepad and pen again and started to write, ‘Met a girl by the name of Julia, seems like a nice person, new here like me, possibly a good chance to have someone to work with, bloody hard working on my own,’ he wrote then flipped his notebook and pen away again.

Shay decided to knock on the desk to try and get somebody’s attention, and all of a sudden a small man popped up from behind the desk, only his eyes could be seen, “Ooh, sorry been asleep,” the little man yawned, “Who is it?”

Shay grinned to himself, “Detective Shay Wright,” he said to the little man, who sighed, “Your boss called about you, alright, room number 11, here’s the keys,” the little man said, Shay nodded, grabbed the keys and wandered off down the corridor to room 11

It hadn’t taken long until Caleb was back in his room, his blonde curls wet and hanging limply around his face and occasionally sticking to his cheeks, while he listened to the running water of his mother’s shower.

Rubbing the towel on his hair for the tenth time this morning, he gave a patent sigh as he slipped on a oversized, green tee and thanked the heavens for the umpteenth time for the local school having no uniform. He’d seen the pictures where the kids all looked the same; read the forums that complained about tightness, uncomfortableness and itchiness.

A soft knock at the door made him raise his head, his eyes meeting the matching pair of his father’s, “Hey, sport.” The usual greeting falling from his dad’s lips, which left Caleb to force a thin smile as he pulled on his jeans and nodded his greeting to his father, “What play is the drama club putting on this month?”

That caused Caleb to pause, it was usually his mother that asked questions such as that and gave an almost inaudible reply as he buttoned and zipped up the offending material that hung round his legs, “Well this month they’re thinking about doing one that a aspiring script writer wrote, but the vote hasn’t been decided.” It was followed with a shrug of his shoulders and the blonde perched at the end of his bed and pulled on the black socks that his mother had left out for him.

Shay had been staring out of the window of his room for a while now, he had taken his fedora off and had hung all of his clothes and put away all of his belongings from his suitcase, he turned and headed back out of the room, locking the door behind him and pocketing his keys,

Shay whistled as he strolled down the hallway, he had decided to explore and get used to the town before he investigated during nights, he exited the inn again and noticed Julia, still leaning against the wall, “What are you doing?” He asked suddenly

Julia jumped, looking at him startled. “Don’t make me jump like that!” She sighed heavily. Looking down the street again, she moved off the wall and then turned to look at him. “Trying to work out where to start exploring, I’m never in a town that long but this town I do want to explore.” She said truthfully

Shay laughed, “Sorry, but in all seriousness, how about we both have a look around together? Considering we’re both new here an’ all,” He suggested, a smile on his face as he again ran his hand through his hair, he then looked at his car, “And besides, if we need to we can have a ride in my car.”

Julia looked at his car and then at him chuckling softly. “I guess it is always better to get lost with someone than when you are by yourself.” She grinned. “Where do you want to start?”

“I’d think we just wander about for a bit, have a look at anything that catches our eye, sound good?” Shay asked stepping down onto the pavement, his cloak flowing behind him.

Julia thought about it for a moment before looking at Shay with a smile. “Okay, that sounds cool.” She said softly, adjusting her bag so it was in a more comfortable position

“I see. Are you planning to audition?” His father arched his brow, observing his son as he pulled on a pair of black converses and simply sat there blinking at him. Oliver had to admit that with his job down at the station, he didn’t ask about, nor talk about, his son’s hobbies and how everything was going as much as a father is expected to.

“No. Not this month,” Caleb told him with a thin smile, pushing himself back onto his feet before grabbing his black jacket and pulling it on, “Uh, does Mum still want help carrying those boxes across to the inn?” He tilted his head to his side, only to receive a simple nod in response.

“Yes.” Oliver replied simply, glancing behind him at the door of his son’s room. The shower water was no longer running, indicating Mya was finished - maybe they should—

“Maybe we should start carrying them over, just to take the load off Mum when we need to leave.” Caleb took the thought right out of his head and his father turned to face him once again, nodding his head before they both walked out of the room in unspoken agreement.

The dining table was covered in brown boxes that held essentials for Caleb’s mother to restock the inn, so they were rather important. The two of them would need to start carrying them across and put them in the stock room for Mya to re-open and re-stock the inn later.

Grabbing one in his arms, Caleb hauled it off the table and grunted under the weight of it. It was almost a shame when his father lifted one up with ease and walked off toward the front door without any trouble, Caleb straining after him. He was trying to keep his balance and not drop the box of who knows what.

Shay started to walk forwards, “I’ll be honest, i thought i was going to be alone in this town,” He said, getting used to where things were in the town.

Julia looked at him, while following him. “Don’t most detectives have partners though?” She asked. “And being alone isn’t so bad, at least you can’t get disappointed or let down by someone else.”

Stepping out of the doorway, Oliver inhaled heavily and a smile spread onto his lips. He really loved the smell of fresh air and the sun washing over his skin. He didn’t waste a second, heading over towards the doors of the inn, and failed to notice the onward struggle happening behind him.

Caleb adjusted the box in his arms, shuffling forward a few steps and mentally kicked himself for picking up one of the more heavier boxes. He didn’t even get completely out of the doorway before he found himself sprawled out on the path. It had been a pretty ungraceful sight to see: Caleb had managed to trip over the doorframe, snagging his foot as he was just about to cross over, and had fallen out of the door, hitting the ground hard. The box had tumbled out of his hands, leaving the sound of clattering to attract his father’s attention.

“Caleb?” The shocked sound of his father’s voice rang out, the cerulean eyes locking onto him before he set the box aside and rushed over to him, “Caleb? Are you hurt?”

Shaking his head, Caleb forced a shaky laugh and rubbed the back of his neck as he pushed himself up to his knees, “No. I’m not hurt.” He reached up to run a hand through his hair and got to his feet, with his father’s help. His father had got as far as the gate, the box sitting just inside of it which showed how much faster he’d been moving compared to his son.

Oliver breathed a sigh of relief, dusting down Caleb’s sleeves and ruffled his hair, “Okay, sport. Let’s hope nothing’s broken.” He chuckled, signalling over to the box that had scuff marks from sliding along the ground. Wincing, the teen nodded and moved over to pick up the box once again. “Careful now.” Oliver said softly, walking back over to his own box.

Julia heard a noise and turned around to look. “Hang on” She gently ran back to the inn before looking at the house across it, seeing someone getting up and so she couldn’t help but snigger a bit. “Is he alright?” She called to them
